I stopped by Tirzah’s studio a few days ago and let’s just say I already have plans to add at least one of her new paintings to my collection.

Stop by the Red House Gallery, 118 W. Mill St. in Bayfield, from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, for Tirzah’s solo show and see the gems she’s been working on.  We’re calling the show “Painting Postpartum” because this will be Tirzah’s first big solo show since she gave birth to a beautiful little girl.

I’ll post more teaser images of her work soon.

At the Spring Gallery Walk in Durango

At the Spring Gallery Walk in Durango

The Red House Gallery didn’t open its doors in May, but I have been busy checking out local art, here in town and up in Denver.
If you missed DAWDLE, the art walk organized by the Durango Youth Coalition, you missed out.  The show was magnificent (and I hardly ever use that word).
Not many surprises at the Spring Gallery Walk in Durango, but I did have a good time.  I just wish the galleries on Main would stop thinking so much about the tourist looking for “Southwestern Art” and start thinking about local collectors who are looking for something good, original and challenging.
Lots of cow and animal art at the Spring Gallery Walk

Denver has a lot of the sort of pop L.A.-type art that I and every other young collector around is into right now.  Check out these pieces I found in a Denver brewery:

And as for the Red House Gallery, I’m ridiculously excited about the next show.

Here’s the down-low:  In and out of Line: The work of Two Emerging Artists, opens from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at The Red House Gallery, 118 W. Mill St. in Bayfield. The show will feature the art of Nate Schnell and Dakotah Andreatta. Schnell’s work focuses on precise line work, balance and design while Andreatta’s work focuses on content and color, the later of which often bleeds through his line work for a bit of a chaotic but beautiful finish. The works are different, but similar in their young, pop-art tone

Here’s a piece by Dakotah that caused a stir of excitement at DAWDLE:

The Red House will then take July off and open on August 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. with a solo show featuring the works of Tirzah Camacho, who took some time off to have a baby and is finally back with new works never seen in the area.

I meant to post a link to this article about The Red House Gallery in the Telegraph a long time ago.  Now ’tis done.

The Durango Herald paid our little gallery a visit last weekend and wrote some very nice things.  Read the article here.  Then get out your little black book and mark down the next show, which is happening Sunday, May 17, at 118 West Mill St. in Bayfield.

And if you missed last Saturday’s show, here are a few photos of some of the artwork:

100% Birgitta: The Fine Art of Revolutionary Crochet, a show currently on view at The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, is one of those things that can’t be put into words very well:

Me: We’re going to see an art show.

A disinterested 20-year-old boy: What? What kind of art show?

Me: A show on crochet.

Boy: What?!!  I’m NOT going to see a show on crochet.

Me: But it’s going to be awesome, I promise. Birgitta is a rock star, or, she at least made bad-ass crocheted outfits for rock starts like Jimmy Cliff and The Beatles.

Boy: Sounds whack.

Me: Just wait until you see it.

Sure enough, after we went to see the show last week, the kid had to admit it was pretty cool.  You’ll dig, too, so make it a point to stop by 100% Birgitta before August 2.

A scene from the first opening at The Red House Gallery

Big thanks to The Durango Telegraph for doing such a great job on the story about The Red House Gallery.  I’d link to the story, but The Telegraph’s website has been down for days.  As soon as it’s back up and running, I’ll post it.

The next opening at The Red House Gallery is happening Saturday, April 18, from 4 to 9 p.m.  I’m calling it Still Searching: An Art Show, because I still don’t know enough local artists to put together a tightly curated show.  Plus, these first few months, it’s more important to me to get artists up and in here than it is to show off my curatorial skills (pretentious museum curators are now gasping in horror).

If you’re an artist looking to show your work, please submit low-res jpegs to me by emailing kinsee@theredhousegallery.com.  Send an artist statement, too, so I can start putting this thing together.

The Durango Youth Coalition puts out a call to artists in the Four Corners region:

Show your work in a community-wide art walk in Durango April 23

From 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 23, the Durango Youth Coalition will be hosting a community-wide art walk featuring local artists. Participating venues include Lost Dog, Pure Soul Coffee and the Smiley Building. Attendees will be encouraged to walk or ride their bikes from venue to venue to see the local art.

There is no entry fee to artists. Emerging artists are especially encouraged to sign-up & participate!

Interested artists need to have their hang-ready art by April 19. Artists are asked to first send an email to durangoyouthcoalition@gmail.com or call 814-282-3039 to reserve their space in the art walk.

The Durango Youth Coalition will use this event as a fundraiser by collecting donations from area businesses for a raffle at the end of the evening, and by accepting art donations from local artists to have in a silent auction. Artists are also encouraged to sell their work at the show. When you email or call to express interest in the show, please let us know if you are interested to submit something for the silent auction as well.
