Sezio, a online and in real-time arts and music collaborative based in San Diego, ran a nice interview about my time in San Diego and my decision to move here to Colorado.

The Red House Gallery, 118 W. Mill St. in Bayfield, opens its second monthly show from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April, 18, with Still Searching: An Art Show, featuring the works of Four Corners artists including Bradley Kachnnowicz, Kate Skrainka, Cindy Coleman, Stephen Eginoire, Heather Leavitt, James Poe, Kinsee Morlan (owner and curator) and others.

The show will be up for one night only and will include paintings, photography and crochet art.

The alternative gallery space continues with its mission to focus on local emerging art and to activate Mill Street in sleepy little Bayfield, Colorado. The shows will continue to open every third Saturday of the month.

100% Birgitta: The Fine Art of Revolutionary Crochet, a show currently on view at The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, is one of those things that can’t be put into words very well:

Me: We’re going to see an art show.

A disinterested 20-year-old boy: What? What kind of art show?

Me: A show on crochet.

Boy: What?!!  I’m NOT going to see a show on crochet.

Me: But it’s going to be awesome, I promise. Birgitta is a rock star, or, she at least made bad-ass crocheted outfits for rock starts like Jimmy Cliff and The Beatles.

Boy: Sounds whack.

Me: Just wait until you see it.

Sure enough, after we went to see the show last week, the kid had to admit it was pretty cool.  You’ll dig, too, so make it a point to stop by 100% Birgitta before August 2.

If you missed last Friday’s Edible Book exhibition at the Durango Arts Center, your mouth should grow its own little hands and start slapping you.  The Everyone Poops display made me giggle, Mary Ellen Long’s sushi book would’ve delighted me had I seen it before it was devoured and the rabbit made of cheese made my mouth water.  Here’s a few more pics:

I see Mary in my toast!

Theres that delicious cheese rabbit I was telling you about.

Big thanks to The Durango Telegraph for doing such a great job on the story about The Red House Gallery.  I’d link to the story, but The Telegraph’s website has been down for days.  As soon as it’s back up and running, I’ll post it.

The next opening at The Red House Gallery is happening Saturday, April 18, from 4 to 9 p.m.  I’m calling it Still Searching: An Art Show, because I still don’t know enough local artists to put together a tightly curated show.  Plus, these first few months, it’s more important to me to get artists up and in here than it is to show off my curatorial skills (pretentious museum curators are now gasping in horror).

If you’re an artist looking to show your work, please submit low-res jpegs to me by emailing kinsee@theredhousegallery.com.  Send an artist statement, too, so I can start putting this thing together.

The Durango Youth Coalition puts out a call to artists in the Four Corners region:

Show your work in a community-wide art walk in Durango April 23

From 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 23, the Durango Youth Coalition will be hosting a community-wide art walk featuring local artists. Participating venues include Lost Dog, Pure Soul Coffee and the Smiley Building. Attendees will be encouraged to walk or ride their bikes from venue to venue to see the local art.

There is no entry fee to artists. Emerging artists are especially encouraged to sign-up & participate!

Interested artists need to have their hang-ready art by April 19. Artists are asked to first send an email to durangoyouthcoalition@gmail.com or call 814-282-3039 to reserve their space in the art walk.

The Durango Youth Coalition will use this event as a fundraiser by collecting donations from area businesses for a raffle at the end of the evening, and by accepting art donations from local artists to have in a silent auction. Artists are also encouraged to sell their work at the show. When you email or call to express interest in the show, please let us know if you are interested to submit something for the silent auction as well.

The opening last Saturday was a success.  About 60 to 70 people showed up, a few people bought prints and originals and, most importantly, people seemed to have a good time.  The next opening will be on April 18.  I’m shooting for every third Saturday of the month and I’m hoping the rest of Mill Street will get involved by the next go-round.

I owe a big thanks to the owner of the building across the street who let me take it over for the night to show local art.  The so-called Red House Gallery Annex building will allow me to show a lot more work!  Again, if you’re an artist looking to show your work, email me at kinsee@theredhousegallery.com.

The Return to Simple Living by Mike Maxwell

We’re a brand-new, contemporary-art gallery located in beautiful Bayfield, Colorado right on Mill Street in the center of town. Our first show opening is in March, and if all goes well, we’ll be holding openings on a regular basis. The first art exhibition will simply be a  showing of our own personal collection of paintings and prints from San Diego and Tijuana emerging artists. We hope to show that even young, poor people like us can afford to own original art. ;)

If you’re an artist in the Four Corners area and interested in showing your work with us, send an e-mail to kinsee@theredhousegallery.com.
