A solo show featuring the found-art sculptures of Bayfield artist Jenny Treanor will open at the Red House Gallery Annex, 99 West Mill Street, in Bayfield from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. This is a one-night only show and is free and open to the public.

Jenny Treanor is a well-known local artist who begins her process by hunting and gathering in antique stores, flea markets, thrift stores, junkyards, trash heaps, roadside ditches and forest litter.

“Items that intrigue my imagination are ones that show wear and tear,” explains Treanor.

Once she gets the bits and pieces home, Treanor allows her intuition to dictate what goes where.

“My process is like putting together a puzzle, while not having seen the finished product,” says Treanor.

The artist, who has shown at the Durango Art Center, Shy Rabbit in Pagosa and many other local venues, says she then matches patinas and works with each piece by noticing how shapes interplay. When she reaches the point of what she considers ‘finished,’ she often is surprised as what she gets.

“The unexpected message is often surprising and always an adventure,” Treanor says.

The Red House Gallery didn’t open its doors in May, but I have been busy checking out local art, here in town and up in Denver.

If you missed DAWDLE, the art walk organized by the Durango Youth Coalition, you missed out. The show was magnificent (and I hardly ever use that word).

Not many surprises at the Spring Gallery Walk in Durango, but I did have a good time. I just wish the galleries on Main would stop thinking so much about the tourist looking for “Southwestern Art” and start thinking about local collectors who are looking for something good, original and challenging.

Lots of cow and animal art at the Spring Gallery Walk

Denver has a lot of the sort of pop L.A.-type art that I and every other young collector around is into right now. Check out these pieces I found in a Denver brewery:

And as for the Red House Gallery, I’m ridiculously excited about the next show.

Here’s the down-low: In and out of Line: The work of Two Emerging Artists, opens from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at The Red House Gallery, 118 W. Mill St. in Bayfield. The show will feature the art of Nate Schnell and Dakotah Andreatta. Schnell’s work focuses on precise line work, balance and design while Andreatta’s work focuses on content and color, the later of which often bleeds through his line work for a bit of a chaotic but beautiful finish. The works are different, but similar in their young, pop-art tone

Here’s a piece by Dakotah that caused a stir of excitement at DAWDLE:

The Red House will then take July off and open on August 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. with a solo show featuring the works of Tirzah Camacho, who took some time off to have a baby and is finally back with new works never seen in the area.
